I remember graduating from AL. Life was exciting! There was college, marriage, setting up a dental practice, kids, buying a house. We were young and vibrant. Life was good. It was so busy, always working toward the future. Then all of a sudden somebody told me I'm eligible for social security. What happened? Has there been a mistake?

As alluring as the thought of a miscount may be, I suppose I can actually account for each one of those forty-five years.

The first decade or so was spent in college -- undergrad, grad school, and dental school. In addition -- during time which retrospectively would have been more productively spent studying -- I was spinning the hits for KQKQ (Sweet 98).

The next few decades disappeared while I was drilling small holes in teeth as a general dentist.

I met wife Barb at Creighton, we have two sons, one married the other engaged, but no grandkids as yet.

Instead of working hard so I could have retired early I've devoted way too much time on volunteer projects for the hsitorical society and writing local history books. A half dozen years serving on Amtrak's advisory board likewise claimed a great deal of time that should have been spent working, but was extremely interesting.

The transition to being an empty nester was odd at first, but it's OK. Barb and I enjoy travel. I finally made it to all fifty states and working on the foreign countries, at least the ones that seem relatively safe to visit.

I can't complain. It's not that the years haven't been good... what's disconcerting is that there have been so darn many of them that have gone by!
