I joined the Navy a few months after graduation to see the world but little did I know it would be from a submarine! I was an Electronics Tech on the nuclear fast attack submarine USS Snook (SSN592) and worked on the radar and ESM (Electronic Counter Measures) equipment. I got married three years into my Navy enlistment in 1973 and in 1976, after six years in the Navy, I did the dumbest thing in my life - I left San Diego and went back to Omaha where I worked in a TV shop (First TV) for a year. I then hired on with the FAA as an Electronics Tech in Dubuque, Iowa which turned out to be a turning point in my career. After a year in Dubuque I transferred to Waterloo, Iowa for a promotion and spent another year there working as a radar tech at the airport. By now my son, James, was born and it was time to move for another promotion. This time it was to Oklahoma City to work as an Electronics Technician Instructor at the FAA Academy. That was in 1979. I taught an Automated Radar Terminal System called ARTS IIE to technicians and engineers who maintain this equipment at about 140 airports around the country, helping make it safe for you (not me) to fly! June 30, 2007 was a significant day in my life as I retired from the FAA, after turning 55 years old, with 36+ years of government service, taking my Civil Service retirement while it was still there before the government screwed it up. I have been enjoying every minute of the retired life. My hobbies include sailing, ham radio (KB5REX), web page design, woodworking, photography, just to name a few.
